Tesla Vice President of Business Development Diarmuid O'Connell, speaking in Amsterdam, revealed that reservations for the Tesla Model 3 are rapidly approaching a total of 400,000. The last number we heard was 325,000, so while the pace of reservations has slowed since the initial reveal, the reservations are still rolling in.
O'Connell's speech and following Q&A was at the AVERE E-mobility Conference, as noted by Electrek
The Model 3 electric sedan is set to start production at the end of 2017 and when available will offer a base range of 215 miles. Tesla is taking reservations for the $35,000 vehicle, essentially a $1000 deposit that will hold a spot in line for when production begins.
The huge and still-growing number of reservations does pose a challenge for Tesla, a company that has so far sold just over 100,000 vehicles. O'Connell recognizes this, saying that "The real success will delivering a great product at the volumes we believe are possible and necessary."
