Tesla has hired Audi Senior Director of Production Peter Hochholdinger as Tesla's new Vice President of Vehicle Production.

The hire of Hochholdinger, who was in charge of the production of the Audi A4, A5, and Q5, comes after the departure of two high-level Tesla executives and the promise of new hires from CEO Elon Musk.

In addition to managing production of the Model S and Model X, Hochholdinger will also be managing the Model 3. The Model 3 poses a monumental challenge for Tesla, with around 400,000 reservations for the car placed and plans to scale up to 500,000 vehicles annually by 2018. At Audi, Hochholdinger managed the production of 400,000 vehicles a year and thousands of employees.
