According to the Auburn, New York, Police Department, a 28-year-old driver crashed his car into a tree while playing Pokémon Go. Despite totalling his car (not a Tesla), the driver thankfully only suffered minor cuts to his legs in the wreck. The Auburn Police expects to issue a citation after their investigation is wrapped up, and gave drivers the most obvious of advice: use common sense and don't play games on your phone when you're driving a car.
In short: don't be a fucking idiot.
This Pokémon Go car wreck comes after Tesla has weathered a few weeks of bad press over the role that Autopilot has played in a few accidents, including one fatal wreck. The NHTSA has also opened an investigation into Autopilot's role in these wrecks, though we highly doubt they'll be doing the same for Pokémon Go and the unending scourge of distracted driving.
Tesla has since the beginning classified Autopilot as a "driver assist system" and warns drivers that they will have to pay attention to the road and be prepared to take over should Autopilot misbehave or turn control back to the driver. Every Autopilot accident so far has been attributable to those factors.
And so, here's your obvious piece of advice for the day: no matter how tempting it is, do not under any circumstances play Pokémon Go while driving your Tesla under Autopilot. You're still driving. Don't be an idiot.
