Tesla is hard at work converting a building on San Francisco's bustling Van Ness Avenue into a new flagship Tesla Store due to open in just a few months. The store, located in the 900-block of Van Ness Ave, will be Tesla's first in San Francisco proper — the company is headquartered an hour south in Palo Alto and manufacturers its vehicles across the bay in Fremont, California.
The work was spotted by redditor spasewalkr. The two-story building is already equipped with rooftop solar panels (mounted over rooftop parking spaces) and was formerly home to a joint Bentley-Lotus-Lamborghini dealership. Van Ness Ave is rife with car dealerships; Tesla is moving in next door to a Jaguar and Land Rover dealership, and two blocks north of a Mini dealership — Nissan and Scion (not long for this world) are located to the north. Mercedes and BMW are located further south in the western tip of the South of Market neighborhood.
Tesla's arrival on Van Ness will also make it the only American brand located in San Francisco proper — though it is also one of the most expensive cities in the nation with strict zoning laws, so it's no surprise that Ford, GM, and Chrysler have opted to stay out of the city.
