There are three things you'll need to reserve your own Tesla Model 3: an internet connection, $1,000, and a lot of patience.
The base model of the Tesla Model 3 is set to start at a mere $35,000 — a far cry from the $75,000 starting price of the bigger Model S. But you don't need that thirty-five grand today, no, you can reserve your spot in the quickly-growing Tesla Model 3 line for just $1,000.
How to reserve your Tesla Model 3
- Go to model3.tesla.com.
- Enter your contact and billing info.
Check that you want to test drive a Model S
If you haven't driven a Model S yet, you really should — it'll give you an idea of what the electric drive on the Model 3 will be like, and it's just plain fun.
- Click the red Reserve your Model 3 button at the bottom of the page.
And that it! You'll receive an email soon afterwards (Tesla says within 24 hours) confirming your reservation. Optionally, you can go into any Tesla Store and place and pay for your reservation there instead.
Once Tesla is ready to build your order, they'll send you an email prompting you to configure your Model 3. Once configured, you'll receive a purchase agreement with the complete purchase price and applicable fees. Not until you agree to the purchase agreement will Tesla charge you for the rest of the order, rolling your $1,000 reservation fee into the cost of the car.
When will I get my Model 3?
Tesla CEO Elon Musk says he expects production of the Model 3 to start in late 2017, with the first deliveries happening on the North American West Coast and then progressing east. Overseas deliveries will be staggered through Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and right-hand drive markets due to the unique production requirements of each region.
Aside from regional staggering, we expect that the ordering queue will be generally first-come, first-served. There is one notable exception: previous Model S and Model X buyers will be moved to the front of the line and will be among the first to receive purchase invitations.
How do I cancel my Tesla Model 3 reservation?
Decided you don't want or need a Model 3 and want your $1,000 deposit back? Here's how to cancel your reservation:
- Go to teslamotors.com/contact.
- Enter your contact info.
- Check the Contact me through email or text message option.
- In the Topic menu select Existing Order or Reservation.
- In the Question/Comment field, type that you would like to cancel your Model 3 reservation.
- Click on Submit
After submitting your cancellation request, a Tesla representative will contact you to verify and process your request. You should expect the refund of your reservation fee to take 3-6 weeks.
Alternatively, you can visit any Tesla showroom or service center and a Tesla employee there will be able to assist you in canceling your reservation.
